The Northern Gateway - achieving a balance between development and the natural environment

Dr. Martin Bailey, Royal Haskoning

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the major port development, Northern Gateway, was undertaken by Royal Haskoning on behalf of PD Teesport. The presentation demonstrated how a positive approach to consultees and the involvement of partnersidentified key issues for the EIA and helped to alleviate potential tensions between the developer and the regulators.

The State of the Natural Environment of the Tees Estuary

Teesmouth & Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area - Birds, Business and the Bigger Picture

This looked at the current condition of this internationally-important wildlife site, an analysis of potential threats and a took a forward look at “what does sustainable development really mean in this context and how can we all contribute?”.

Natural and human-induced changes to the ecology of the Tees Estuary

Daryl Burdon Estuarine Ecologist & Socio-Economist, Hull University

The talk presented recent and historical studies on the hydrography, sedimentology and ecology of the Tees Estuary in general and Seal Sands in particular in relation to natural and sewage-derived nutrients. It summarised the results of a major study managed by Northumbrian Water plc, the Environment Agency and Natural England into the causes and consequences of nutrient derived problems in the estuary.
